Two throttle cables

Post by PSIBRG »

Ok I feel like a bit of an idiot for asking this so go easy

What is the purpose of the second throttle cable on my 2JZ-GE? I've got one that is connected to the happy pedal, and one that runs down to the middle of the firewall area and disappears, though i'm not sure where to.

Some of you will know i've been trying to solve a high idle/cruise rpm problem. I identified one throttle cable as the one that goes to the accelerator pedal. The other cable still revs the motor when pulled on, but I thought it wasn't hooked up to anything so I never took a second look at it.

Turns out this other cable has been binding occasionally, causing the throttle to be held open slightly. I disconnected it, and now running only off the accel pedal cable, took it up the road quickly and it seemed to run sweet..

I can only think it might have something to do with traction control, but really thats just a stab in the dark. Do I need this second cable at all? If not i'll just leave it disconnected and call it problem solved!

Yes i've just found out it's for the auto kick-down (2JZ-GE run cable operated kick-down). Guess I need it afterall...
I can't work out why it's not closing properly though. The cable seems to work fine. The spring seems fine. Everything seems fine, until I connect the cable up, and then it's like it has to be closed by force cause it won't close all the way by itself.

Just took it for a good drive with the cable disconnected. The car still kicked down without the cable connected but it was alot slower, I guess the ECU can still over-ride the cable if it wants to? Also the car took way longer to shift up from 1st to 2nd, as if the trans was slipping in between the gears. Interesting...

Have a look here: http://www.autoshop101.com/forms/AT11.pdf

I think the kick down cable raises line pressure when the accelerator cable is pushed down and will chane gear if needed.

The cable is sweet, moves in and out nicely. Gonna try another throttle body first in case somethings a bit off with this one, if not, I guess the cable is next on the list...

Makes sense to me, the lowered pressure from having the line disconnected would lead to the lazy feeling that the car had when shifting I spose?

Well... a video tells a thousand pictures haha.

Throttle spring, as you can see, with the cable disconnected it functions as it should:

Throttle cable, as you can see, when it's not hooked up it seems sweet:

Put them together aaaand... this happens:
