Unknown history before me but assuming some abuse
Car had around 120km on it at time of failure
Fluid changed around 90km (still smelt surprisingly good for diff oil)
Originally replaced with overpriced open diff to get mobile as was only diff I could find at that stage.
Then replaced with upgraded mk3 supra clutch pack centre

Re: Hilux LSD
Worm gears on Torsen split lengthways and jammed crownwheel to pinion.
Locked diff solid before exiting through rear cover

Re: Hilux LSD
Mine's suprising tight as you can feel the bind when accelerating out of corners. Maybe it's the oil choices for the diff or the age/condition of it? I'm running TRD LSD oil and it has no trouble drifting hampton and through the coromandle touge.archon wrote:As a street diff for going places quickly, without chirping wheels when trying to parallel park etc, torsen is awesome. For holding drift angle, not so awesome.

no surprises there as torsen diffs work hugely from the friction between:
right side gear to right worm gear
right worm gear's spur gear to left worm gear's spur gear
left super gear to left side gear
vice versa
and friction caused by forces parallel to the axis of rotation of each gear
the above plus worm pitch , circular pitch, depth and width of the tooth sums up to make up the torque bias ratio...
less friction the oil has, the greater the torque bias ratio
on a side note, this explains why torsens open-wheel when you get air time or don't work as well on ice because it can only transfer the amount of torque (between tyre and surface) from one side to another. Hence, if amount of torque through the driveshaft is... 300 Nm, but one wheel is on the grass and the maximum torque transferred from the tyre to the grass is 20 Nm (imagine the tyre spinning/slipping hardout), and the torque bias ratio is 5:1, then the torsen diff will transfer 5x torque to the other wheel = 100Nm. Hence if one wheel is airborn, 5x 0 Nm = 0 Nm
ugh....

Re: Hilux LSD
Mine was ok sometimes and others it was all over the show
Very inconsistent
Interesting having one wheel light up when passing in 5th gear was interesting (damn white lines)

Re: Hilux LSD
So what's the best LSD out there other than spending $2400 on a cusco 2-way?

Depends what you use your car for...ch4sernz wrote:Mine was ok sometimes and others it was all over the show

Daily driver with occassional tracking/drifting = torsen .. nothing wrong with them IMO
remember, your car's still auto... there's a good reason why LSD's are optional on auto jzx110s
Re: Hilux LSD
Torsens are good daily diffs.
I just don't trust them anymore and you do need to be a little cautious in the wet (like any car with reasonable power)
