1jzgte vvti failed emissions test (compliance)

so my jzx110 mark II failed compliance coz its emitting too much gas, namely HydroCarbon and CO2. From what it seems, the engine is running perfectly smooth but obviously it's running rich for some reason.

1. Checked the spark plugs - OK
2. changed the air filter to TRUST hi-flow - old one was darker than black LOL
3. checked if there are any vacuum leaks

from what i know, idle speed should be 600-700 rpm right? what if its idling slightly below that, say 450-550 RPM? I know low idle speed will definitely affect emissions. Also, when the car arrived, the battery was flat. I know there's no away of testing if I really need to replace the battery unless you actually do a proper load test on it. However, I figured I'll just replace the battery and hopefully that will solve problem.

SOOOO faar i will replace:

THE BATTERY!!- hopefully that will fix it, coz if the battery/engine is charging all the time because it cant hold a charge anymore, then the idle speed will go low and that will mess up the emissions (at least thats what i think for now)

Can anyone suggest any other factors that might be affecting the emission? Any other remedies you guyz can think of?

What exhaust does it have on it? Does it have a cat currently? - if not, just get one welded in for compliance.

You won't beable to adjust the idle speed unfortunately, it's all set by the ECU. You can play with the allen key screw on the throttle body however i'd suggest against it.

when my car idles at 500rpm, its because the ecu has jumped into safe mode, or limp mode, and is running full rich all the time to protect the engine. can be smokey (black smoke), very sluggish, slow to spool on turbo, etc etc. this is not indicated by engine check light on the dash for some reason - checklight remains off.

id say some sensor is tripping your car into safemode. my car occasionally starts in safemode and i notice when idle is low and lumpy. turn car off, turn back on, and shes ok. but if yours is doing it all the time, id say something is triggering it.

one troubleshooting method might be plugging in a diagnostics tester thingy to tell you whats making the ecu upset.

fix the sensor issue and your car will return to normal, emissions will be fine also.

prime suspects: O2 sensor, MAP sensor or AFM whatever your car runs.

Alot of the scanners out there will not communicate with JZX100 ECU's.

If you want to get it checked out, go and see AJ (unstable) who's the boss at Pit Stop Grey Lynn. His G-Scan will beable to find out if you have any trouble codes.

Or you could just try the old paper clip "TE1 to E1" diagnostic?

Count the flashes to see what is causing the trouble. Plenty of sites out there with a list of the codes and what they mean.

Are they testing it while cold or hot as this will make a huge difference. Also if the scan test shows up nothing you are kinda in shit street as most 6/4 cylinder turbos are already unable to be complied here because of emissions they put out. You could try putting in another cat or installing another one if you don't have one already if that fails get a old skool s-afc and lean the shizzle out of it at idle just for the compliance. won't hurt anything for just a idle test but it will get rid of nasty emissions. Remember most toyotas are very rich on cold start and at idle, so it may require some trickery to get it complied.

I was given a tip by a few guyz in the business, they said i should just give it a good hard run. Pretty common for performance imports to fail emission tests, they said. Come to think of it, it's been sitting for at least 2 months and only ran for very short trips.

The engine is not struggling or anything. It's actually really really smooth even at 500+ RPM. No smoke whatsoever even when i'm revving hard. I would change the battery tomorrow and give it a good run if I get a hold of a dealer's plate. (hopefully the compliance centre will lend me one)

As ya saying, change battery and give it a good run. Im sure that test sometimes depends on which complinace center you use. Some are more by the book than others so to speak
