1jz-gte VVTi speedo/tacho issue

Post by xMRWHIPPIEx »

hey guys,

i am in the process of tidying up the JZX90 cresta i bought two weeks ago, and the main thing bugging me at the moment is the speedo reads untrue and the tacho doesnt read at all.

It has a 1JZ-GTE VVTi swapped into it and an R154 M/T.
the work was done at DKM Fabrications and i was told the speedo and tacho worked fine before the engine/tranny swap was done.

i am wanting to get both working as it annoys the shit out of me having to compensate for my actual speed versus what the speedo is telling me.

so, can anyone recommend a good auto-sparkie to install and calibrate the part i have just purchased?

also has anyone used one before? if so, are you happy with it?

I also had the problem of no tacho after buying a jzx91 with the 1jzgte r154 swap. Im under the impression its something to do with voltage output of the turbo engines vs non turbo engines. Could be completely wrong. Not sure about vvti though. With the analouge clusters i saw people bypassing a resistor to get the tacho going but thats a pain as i have digital(circuits are just uggh..). Ended up just wiring up an external tacho piece of piss.

On that note. LET ME KNOW how your new interface thing goes. Could be keen to get one myself if they have no troubles :D

Cheers

cheers for the diagram dude!

i will honest, anything more in depth than wiring in a new headunit is well-beyond me. i get a bad case of dyslexic-as-fuckitis when it comes to electrical stuff.
I can understand most of the diagram, but what does a setup like this actually look like?
ive done a quick google search but barely know what to look for  apologies for newbness

cheers

Basically just go to jaycar and show them that diagram and theyll get you the bits, then i just solder them all together and wrap it all up around the relay with insul tape, looks like shit but works. Then its just a case of tapping off a 12v wire and a ground and cutting the tach wire and putting this inline with it.

Weekend mjni project sorted. Cheers for diagram.

Quick question though. I don't quite understand that coil bit? And best to tap off 12v constant or ignition?

The coil (inductor) is there to filter RF / interference from the power source. IE alternator. It isn't absolutely necessary but its a good idea to include it in the circuit. Acc power would be fine.

i seem to have these jaycar part numbers in my tach adaptor folder:

zt2193 - transistor
sy4061 - relay

knew i should save that info for future reference
