I used Castrol Edge 5w30 since 90,000kms. Now at 125,000kms and have switched to Penrite HPR5 (5w40) as the engine is a little older, plus I wanted to use the same oil across all of my cars, but mainly because Castrol kept cranking the price up on the Edge stuff (retail was about $50 for 5 litres in 2010, now about $85).

I change the oil and filter every 5,000kms, with negligible oil usage between changes.

I have also used castrol edge 5w30 for the last 50,000km
Changed oil and filter every 5,000km
Looking to change to a 10w40 next time round

I use whatever is on special as long as it's from a reputable brand.
In the last 6 months i've used:

Valvoline VR-1 - 10W-30 (3000km)
Motul 300v - 10W-40 (3000km)

This weekends oil change will be
Penrite HPR 10 - 10W-50

None have given me problems at all. Motul 300v smells like delicious :)

i was going to ask what people thought of castrol edge
im a castrol agent and get all that stuff cheap, but doing independent oil tests on some castrol oils ( agricultural and heavy diesel oils ) i am rather dubious of putting it in my 1j, trans and hydraulic miss haps are always high, i know different grade oil etc but it tends to put you off

thoughts would be nice

at the moment im using Total Quartz 7000 which is a good hard wearing oil and never had any issues with it

doing a oil test is well worth the money, you will be surprised at some brands at how fast they break down

I have had a good run with Castrol edge
No metallic sheen
Nice and clean
No burning smell

Haven't sent away a sample though

Did consider running John Deere +50 though haha now that's some good oil ;)

I don't have a vvti but I've used Valvoline VR-1 the last 3-4 changes in both my cars and it's always come out reasonably nice and clean looking. As opposed to Castrol GTX which I used to run all the time, cheap but it always came out black.

valvoline engine armour 10w-30

34 bucks for 6 litres from k-mart.

used to run castrol edge, but thats 90 bucks for 5L, which is incredibly retarded.

Just bringing this old thread back, my 1jz gte vvti has done 108,000kms.

in terms of viscosity, what do you guys recommend, 10w30 or 10w40?

i am leaning towards 10w40 just because the engine is getting older now, but any thoughts are most welcome.

108,000 kms for a vvti 1jz is nothing. As long as you service it and maintain it properly, it should last you well beyond 200,000 kms :)
